The British Embassy in Brussels is part of a world-wide network of nearly 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are now looking for a Market Access Adviser to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team.

Main purpose of job:

This role will support UK, Belgian and Luxembourg businesses to understand the terms of trade following the UK’s departure from the EU and make the most of trade opportunities between the UK and EU countries. The successful candidate will work closely with the Trade Policy Officers, the Market Access Hub and the Export Support Service to address enquiries and issues raised by businesses looking to trade between the UK and Belgium or Luxembourg, by investigating, understanding and explaining the rules where barriers to trade are encountered, and proposing actions to remove these barriers where applicable and appropriate.

Roles and responsibilities:

The main responsibilities of the Market Access Adviser are:

  • Answering business enquiries on the terms of trade between the UK and Belgium/Luxembourg following UK’s departure from the EU. Examine regulation or procedures related to the presented issue, clarify these to the UK exporter and - when possible - provide a solution;
  • Working closely with the Market Access Hub and other Market Access Officers to build knowledge about trade rules across the EU and in specific Member States, and by doing so, contribute to the development of regional advice;
  • Identifying and addressing longer-term trade barriers, explore potential solutions, when necessary escalate these internally to the Trade Policy Officer or Country Director as well as the Bilateral Relations Team in London, to work together and try to resolve these;
  • Monitoring and reporting on trade policy developments in Belgium and Luxembourg, scan for potential barriers to trade (e.g. through proposed or new legislation or procedures), and assess impact on UK business interests;
  • Supporting Trade Policy Officers, Country Directors or the wider Embassy team on market access work as required, including commercial dialogues, ministerial visits, business outreach and engagement;
  • Contributing to the wider Embassy objectives in post;
  • This role is not limited to the tasks described above; responsibilities may evolve through time. Any change of responsibilities will be reflected in the job description.

The successful candidate will need to be able to understand and interpret complex details from EU and national laws and procedures, be a good communicator to explain these clearly to UK businesses and colleagues, and work closely and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders in country, regionally and with London headquarters.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Good level of French and Dutch(written and spoken, minimum of B2 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Relevant experience working with international business (UK, Belgian and/or Luxembourg business);
  • Demonstrable analytical skills, the ability to make sense of complex information;
  • Ability to work remotely as part of a team as well as on own initiative;
  • Dynamic and proactive mind-set, with ability to work under pressure and juggle competing deadlines.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience working with Belgian/Luxembourg trade rules;
  • Previous or relevant experience of trade policy and market access issues;
  • Some previous experience, or interest in, working on European affairs.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a permanent, full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. The monthly gross salary for this position is € 4,328.16 ,B3 level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme , optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
